MEMORY MONDAY
Yesterday, 6th February, marked a momentous and historic milestone in the nation’s story, as it was on that day in 1952 that Her Majesty the Queen acceded to the throne. She is the first British monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee. The Queen released a message thanking the public and her family for their support and looking forward to the jubilee celebrations to come. In her message, she acknowledges the poignancy of the date of her accession, since it also marks the anniversary of the death of her father, King George VI. She also references the broadcast she made on her 21st birthday in which she pledged her life’s work to the people of the Commonwealth with the words: “I declare before you all that my whole life, whether it be long or short, shall be devoted to your service”.
The year ahead will see many events throughout the UK celebrating the 70 years of public service given by Queen Elizabeth II. The focus of national and local celebrations will centre on the four-day bank holiday weekend from Thursday 2nd June to Sunday 5th June. Details of these can be found at www.royal.uk/platinum-jubilee-central-weekend The History Group will be marking the jubilee year in our own way by allocating a section of our website to ways in which The Queen has impacted individuals and the community. For this, we would like your help. Have you been to see The Queen when she visited the local area (this one or in another area you lived)? Did she visit your school, university or workplace? Do you recall past jubilee celebrations? Have you met The Queen or perhaps received a letter from her? Any stories and/or photos you have will be warmly welcomed and will feature on our website as part of our community’s celebration of the Platinum Jubilee of H.M The Queen.
